AMERICAN COLLEGE OF HISTORY AND LEGAL STUDIES HOSTS FREE SEMINAR ON THE 150th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BALL'S BLUFF
SALEM, NH – The American College of History and Legal Studies ("ACHLS") will host a free seminar entitled "The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Ball's Bluff" on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 9:00 am to 12 noon. Members of the public are welcome to attend the seminar which will take place at the ACHLS on 1 Stiles Road in Salem, New Hampshire.
The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Ball's Bluff. This presentation and roundtable discussion will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Ball's Bluff, fought on October 21, 1861. This historic Civil War event has aptly been called a small battle that cast a long shadow. Fought on the Potomac above Washington, D.C., it was perhaps the most important engagement of the Civil War in proportion to the number of troops engaged. The battle's outcome, a bitter defeat to President Lincoln, would have political repercussions - particularly about infighting and the Constitutional separation of powers - for years to come. Among the thousands killed was President Lincoln's best friend, Edward Dickinson Baker.
The free seminar will be led by Professor Michael B. Chesson the Founding Professor and Dean at the American College of History and Legal Studies, and former Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts/Boston. Professor Chesson is the author of four books about the Civil War, and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in history.
To RSVP for the free seminar by October 17, 2011 or for further information, contact Maureen Mooney at 603.458.5145 ext. 11 or email info@achls.org. Guests can also reserve a seat online at www.achls.org. Seating is limited.
