NEW HAMPSHIRE GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL AUTHORIZING NEW AMERICAN
COLLEGE OF HISTORY AND LEGAL STUDIES TO GRANT BACHELOR'S
DEGREES

SALEM, NH- New Hampshire Governor John Lynch signed the bill to confer degree-granting
authority on the American College of History and Legal Studies (ACHLS), which is a
revolutionary new senior college set to open in Salem in August in 2010, the college announced
today.

New Hampshire Senate Bill #312, which earlier in this legislative session passed both the full
State Senate and the full House of Representatives unanimously, now allows the college to grant
bachelor's degrees in history and legal studies. The New Hampshire Post Secondary Education
Committee had recommended passage of the bill.

"We are very pleased that Governor Lynch, the entire 424-member New Hampshire Legislature,
and the committee shave given their overwhelming support to the mission of the college," said
Maureen Mooney, the chief operating officer of the ACHLS. "We eagerly anticipate opening in
August and are excited to welcome our first class of students."

The ACHLS is a senior college offering the junior and senior years of undergraduate education
and will grant bachelor's degrees with a major in history and legal studies. Moreover, the college
will provide pathways into the Massachusetts School of Law for qualified students and give them
the opportunity to earn their law degree in only six years instead of the traditional seven years.
The method of teaching at the college will not be by lecture. Instead, professors will use a
combination of the Harkness Method of discussion employed by Phillips Exeter Academy and
the Socratic Method used by the Massachusetts School of Law. The rigorous education provided
by the ACHLS will prepare graduates to compete with anybody in today's competitive
marketplace and make them become critical thinkers, better writers, and better public speakers.
Yet the ACHLS will also be very affordable at a time when the cost of higher education is
increasing dramatically. Tuition is only $10,000 per year and half-tuition scholarships of $5,000
are available to qualified students. The college will hold classes in the evening at its Salem
campus to allow students to balance their lives should they choose to work while finishing their
bachelor's degree.

The ACHLS is currently accepting applications from students who have completed at least two
years of college with a minimum of 60 credits and wish to major in history and legal studies. The
ACHLS will afford students the opportunity to concentrate their studies in four concentrations
during their senior year and those areas are: the history of civil rights, the history of urban
growth and immigration, the history of American foreign relations, and the lessons of American
history.
